LIMBANG: Sarawak is gearing up to host the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA), with an expanded lineup set to ignite economic growth throughout the region.

Sarawak Sports and Youth Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this year’s event will span across nine divisions in Sarawak, promising a plethora of sporting action and economic opportunities.

“Back in 2016, we focused on the sport events held at venues in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri. However, this time, we’ve broadened our horizons to accommodate more Sarawakians and provide ample space for business opportunities, ultimately fueling economic growth through multiplier effects,” he said during the SUKMA Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay here today (Apr 27).

This will be Sarawak’s third time to host the SUKMA Games since its first time in 1990, and second time in 2016.

With a total of 14 states and 1 country, Brunei, participating in the games, he said the influx of teams promises a surge in demand for accommodation, dining and various services.

“I believe hotels, food stalls, transportation rentals, and craft vendors are poised to capitalise on the influx of visitors, contributing to the vibrant local economy,” he added.

Abdul Karim said the strategic allocation of sporting events across Sarawak’s divisions further ensures widespread economic benefits.

“In this year’s SUKMA, Kuching will host 25 sports; followed by Samarahan with three; one each in Serian, Sri Aman and Betong; three each in Sibu, Mukah and Bintulu; and six in Miri, creating opportunities for businesses and communities across the region,” he pointed out.

He also expressed optimism about the socio-economic impact of SUKMA.

“With these, many people will benefit, from hotels and homestays to food stalls, transportation services, and craft vendors. This event has the potential to uplift the grassroots economy, empowering local communities and fostering sustainable development across Sarawak.”
