KUCHING: The strong cooperation between the components of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will enable Sarawak to sail peacefully towards developed status in 2030, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He therefore called upon the component parties to continue to work as a team in order to bring more development to Sarawak and its people.

GPS consists of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).

“Let us work together, we must work as a team. It is not a question of individual party, but it is the question of our future,” he said at the closing ceremony of SUPP annual delegates conference and special convention at its headquarters here on Sunday.

Abang Johari who is also the GPS chairman, said the component parties must be united so that success could be achieved together for the benefit of the state.

“No country can be successful if the people are split. No country can be successful if they do not have a clear-cut direction.

“But thank God, as your chief minister, I must say I have the cooperation from the component parties,” he said.

He said as the state was developing, what was important was to give more emphasis on the people.

“Now the Sarawak government is giving newborns RM1,000 each, and also giving assistance through the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC), in addition we also give Death Compassionate Assistance (BIK) worth RM3,000 for funeral expenses.

“Why? We feel that we can do it. And we have this additional income, and that income must be for the future generation,” he said in alluding to revenue from the State Sales Tax (SST) on oil and petroleum products.

In the meantime, he said as the state was in the process of recovering from Covid-19, SUPP on the other hand had also recovered from its internal crisis.

“I must congratulate SUPP, not only have they recovered from Covid-19, but SUPP’s strength have also recovered.

“… and with that, I wish SUPP all the best,” said Abang Johari.
