MIRI : Police here are tracking down thousands of traffic offenders who are foreigners whose outstanding traffic summonses have to date totalled more than 65,000 since 1997.

Since Thursday, a special 3-day operation to monitor foreign vehicles with outstanding summonses  has been launched at the Miri- Brunei border entry point at Sungai Tujuh.

According to the District police chief, Assistant Commissioner Lim Meng Seah, the operation is to remind the foreigners with traffic offences to settle their outstanding summonses and to abide by traffic rules when visiting our country.

“We hope that the enforcement of the operation would make the foreigners with traffic offences aware and be considerate and responsible and settle their outstanding summonses,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Most of the traffic offences committed by these foreign drivers are: driving exceeding the speed limit and illegal parking, he said.

Lim advised the public not to believe fake news about abuses of power by the traffic police on duty during the operation.
