KUCHING: The Sarawak government has forked out a total of RM32.67mil to help students repay their PTPTN loan.

Yayasan Sarawak said a mock cheque presentation was done on Feb 9 by its director Mersal Abang Rosli to the chief executive officer of PTPTN, Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid, at Yayasan Sarawak’s Kuala Lumpur office.

“The state government through Yayasan Sarawak allocated an initial fund of RM30mil in 2020 to assist Sarawakian students in repaying their loans. Since then, this initiative has benefitted a total of 9,899 Sarawakian students who have repaid at least 30 per cent of their loan in 2020.

“For 2021, it is estimated that this initiative will further benefit a total of 12,700 Sarawakian students identified by PTPTN who have completed their studies successfully and settled at least 30 per cent of their PTPTN loan.

“The state government aims to ease financial burdens of students, especially due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” it said on Wednesday (Feb 16).

Yayasan Sarawak disclosed that it acts as an intermediary between the state government and PTPTN in this initiative thus students do not need to apply for the incentive.

“The implementation of the incentive is done by PTPTN automatically as they identify students who have completed their studies successfully and repayment to PTPTN has reached 30 per cent and above.

“Students will be able to check through, www.ptptn.gov.my/SemakanInsentifBayaranBalikAnakSarawak/ from time to time on the incentive.

“Borrowers who missed out on the first or second batches should not be concerned, as PTPTN will release the next list of eligible borrowers. Borrowers who were not included in this group of recipients this time will be processed in the following grouping.

“Regardless, students are encouraged to make consistent payments to PTPTN because loan repayment is a responsibility.”
