Pact on developing talent for energy industry

KUCHING: SLB, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) signed an agreement formalising their collaboration to develop local talent for the energy industry.

According to a statement, the signing ceremony took place during the open day event held recently to celebrate the inauguration of SLB’s Kuching Technology Centre – the first SLB digital technology centre in the Southeast Asia region.

As at October 2022, Centexs has had three intakes for the Exploration and Production (E&P) Subsurface Training Programme with a total of 37 trainees and one intake for the Drilling Engineering Programme with a total of 10 trainees.

Under the agreement, SLB and Petros will collaborate to provide graduate students at Centexs with technical capability training, using SLB’s expertise, Petros’coaching on Field Development Project (FDP) and practical training.

Petros vice president for Corporate Services and Human Resource, Ismail Said, said talent development plays a key role in realising the government’s aspiration to bring Sarawak to the forefront of the country’s economic development.

“This collaboration is a step forward for Petros in realising its role as an integrator for Sarawak’s talent pipeline in the oil and gas sector.

“We look forward to upholding the commitments and aspirations we have made for Sarawak and Sarawakians and remain steadfast in collaborating in delivering our plans,” he said.

Centexs chief executive officer (CEO), Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman said through this collaboration, it aims to provide its class technology training programmes that are beautifully designed, internationally industry certified and job tailored.

Meng Keong Lee, SLB’s managing director of East Asia said the company took prde in recruiting and developing people, leveraging  the local talent network.

In addition to the training programmes, SLB is also offering study grants to students attending higher learning institutions in Sarawak, namely Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Curtin University and Polytechnic Kuching.

These grants were accepted on behalf of the respective institutions by the Vice Chancellor of Unimas, Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, the Vice Chancellor of Curtin University, Professor Simon Leunig, and the Director of Polytechnic Kuching, Hikmatullah Hajid Ahmad Khan.

The signing ceremony was also witnessed by Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability.
