KUCHING: Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) in a press statement yesterday appreciated the move by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to postpone construction of the proposed LRT project.

However, the statement said it would be better to cancel the project altogether and instead focus on improving the bus service in Kuching and the surrounding areas.

“I suggest that the chief minister let the next generation of leaders worry about the construction of the proposed LRT and start thinking seriously about improving the bus service,” said PBDSB president John Cobbold (pic).

He continued: “Many will agree with me that the bus service in Kuching is almost non-existent and that is why many families have resorted to owning cars to go to work or send their children to school.

“I also call on the chief minister to disclose the details of the LRT study being undertaken by a consultant firm engaged by SEDC. The people want to know what the study reveals and if it is not viable, it is better to totally cancel the LRT project and think about the bus service.

“He should not insist that bus companies use hydrogen-powered buses to ply the streets of Kuching. I believe diesel-powered buses will not cause much pollution. What is important is that the bus service must be efficient.”
