KUCHING: The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is urged to take the necessary steps to solve the scarcity of clean water, especially drinking water, faced by villagers in Kampung Biya Jaber located along Jalan Penrissen Kuching.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) youth central deputy chairman Andrew Victor Nub, who made the call yesterday, said due to the dry spell and haze in the last few weeks, the dam built for the use of the village had dried up. Villagers had been relying on this clean water source for drinking and cooking.

He thanked Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian for his immediate reaction in getting the Welfare Deparment to supply drinking water to the villagers.

Andrew, who is also SUPP Mambong Youth Chief, witnessed the presentation of 270 boxes of drinking water by Welfare Department to Biya Jaber village head Ephesian K Sogod.

“The drinking water can only last for a couple of weeks and I hope the Welfare Department will continue to assist the villagers until the water situation returns to normal,” he added.

Andrew pointed out the water shortage issue had affected the villagers for years.

The water project for Puncak Borneo constituency had been approved by the federal government under the Rural Development Ministry to address the water supply woes of the residents in upper Penrissen and Padawan areas.

However, there is no news on this initiative at the moment.

“I hope that Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin will bring this matter up to the Rural Development Minister to speed up the project.”
