SIBU: Photography competitions serve as a compelling marketing tool for boosting tourism in Sarawak.

Pointing this out, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said the stunning images captured during events like the Sarawak Riverine competition (SRC) are shared with the world, enticing travellers to explore the wonders of the state.

“These captivating photographs provide a glimpse into the magic of Sarawak’s riverine landscapes, cultural diversity, and vibrant heritage.

“They inspire wanderlust and draw tourists from around the globe, stimulating the local economy and supporting businesses within the tourism sector,” he said at the launch of the SRC here on yesterday (Nov 8).

The competition, organised by The Photograhic Society of Sibu Sarawak (PSS) and sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), is divided into five categories, namely Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food and Festival.

The cash prizes for each category is RM3,000 (first prize), RM2,000 (second prize), RM1,000 (third prize) and 10 consolation prizes with RM200 each.

The competition is open to all Malaysians and is free of charge. The photos have to be taken in Sarawak only. The photo submission has started until Dec 8.

Chieng emphasised the profound significance of photography competitions, especially when it comes to the SRC, in boosting Sarawak’s heritage tourism.

Photography competitions play a pivotal role in promoting and preserving these invaluable assets, he said, adding Sarawak, known for its diverse indigenous communities, has a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions.

According to him, SRC provides photographers with a unique opportunity to capture the essence of these cultures.

“Through the lens of a camera, we can document traditional ceremonies, daily life, and the unique customs of the various ethnic groups that call Sarawak home. This documentation serves as a powerful means of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations.”

By highlighting the unique ecosystems of Sarawak, he said it encourages sustainable tourism practices and contribute to the preservation of the natural heritage.
