SEBUYAU: The Sarawak government, in partnership with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), is spearheading initiatives to cultivate new coconut varieties here.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the increased focus on these new varieties would create additional downstream economic opportunities, particularly for local entrepreneurs.

“Beyond its water and flesh, every part of the coconut, including the husk and leaves, is valuable.

“We can transform coconut tree leaves into fertiliser and make chairs from coconut husks. Thus, selling the fruit itself is just one aspect; we can also develop side industries through coconut cultivation,” he said during Hari Raya gathering at the Sebuyau community hall today (Apr 27).

Outlining the initial steps of the project, Abang Johari plans to make way for new species in the area.

“I have already discussed this initiative with Sebuyau assemblyman Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, who will engage with the villagers about the plan to cultivate the new coconut varieties.

“We will work closely with experts from UNIMAS on detailed studies, supported by the RM35 million fund I have approved, allowing this project to move forward,” he added.

Abang Johari also noted that the coconut planting would adopt modern methods similar to those employed in countries like the Philippines and Thailand, which have shown successful results.
