GENTING HIGHLANDS: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Royal Malaysia Customs Department (JKDM) have set up five committees to strengthen enforcements in eradicating smuggling activities and threats by “tonto”.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said more joint operations would be held in soon-to-be-identified locations through the committees.

“When carrying out certain operations, Customs officers face threats like tonto. PDRM will also be together in the operations.

“Before an operation is implemented too, the committee will sit together and discuss the implementation of the operation,’’ he told reporters after the Highest Level Meeting of JKDM and PDRM here yesterday.

Commenting on the meeting, Mohamad Fuzi said that among the matters which were discussed included the issue of the smuggling of contrabands such as cigarette, alcohol and fire crackers.

“This meeting will be turned into an annual activity to enable PDRM and JKDM to discuss numerous issues,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, JKDM director-general Datuk Seri T Subromaniam said the assurance of the police to give protection to personnel implementing operations would boost the spirits of his teams to eradicate smuggling.

“JKDM have information on smuggling syndicates and they have many layers. Therefore, to nab them takes a long time.

“As such, JKDM will not hesitate to use the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA),’’ he said.

Mohamad Fuzi and Subromaniam also signed a Memorandum of Undertaking which would act as a main guideline towards a more effective and systematic process of sharing and exchange of Information. – Bernama
