SIBU: Two local men found their sneaky heist plans dashed when they were caught red-handed breaking into a swiftlet’s nest house at Jalan Durin.

A police team conducting an ‘Ops Lejang’ patrol, busted the suspects, aged 29 and 30, around 2.40 am last Friday (Aug 11).

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the team encountered one of the suspects driving a suspicious sedan near the swiftlet’s nest house.

“Upon investigation, the police found another suspect hiding inside the nest house along with burglary tools believed to belong to both suspects.

“As a result, the police arrested both suspects and seized a Honda Civic car, the equipment including two machetes, around 130g of swiftlet nests, a pair of scissors, a spear, two flashlights, and a mask,” he said in a statement today.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects had broken a hole in the wall of the swiftlet’s nest house to use as an entry and exit point.

Background checks found that both suspects had previous theft records.

“They will be remanded for six days until Aug 17 to assist the investigation under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 14 years’ jail, a fine or whipping for each subsequent offence,” he said.

Zulkipli urged the owner of the premises and the public with information about the burglary of the swiftlet’s nest house to report to the nearby police station.
