Police inspector gets 20 days’ jail, fined for bribery

KUCHING: A Police inspector pleaded guilty to receiving a RM5,000 bribe from a woman in 2015. Azrul Izman Shadan, 35, was accused of receiving a RM5,000 bribe from Amy Yip Su Ling in Sibu on 13 March, 2015 as an inducement for the return of personal effects which were in a car that was seized when Yip’s husband was detained for a drug-related offence.

Azrul was sentenced to 20 days’ jail and fined RM25,000, in default, two months jail after he pleaded guilty to committing the offence under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act, 2009. His jail sentence will start today.

In another case, a former People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) officer was sentenced to eight months’ jail and fined RM273,600 for making false claims. Abdul Wali Fathir Mustapha, 29, who appeared before Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong pleaded guilty to committing offences under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, 2009.

Based on the charge sheet, Abdul Wali filed a false allowance claim for ‘Pengakuan Kehadiran Anggota RELA Yang Bertugas Sebagai Pelapor Peti Undi’ in Serian district for the month of April, 2012, from 1 April, 2012 to 30 April, 2012 amounting to RM54,720,00 for 190 members of RELA on duty during the event. In mitigation he pleaded for leniency as he is the sole breadwinner of his family.
