KUCHING: Police issued a total of 197 summonses to motorists whose vehicle registration numbers were not in accordance with the law.
In the operation codenamed Ops Khas Nombor Pendaftaran from Oct 4 to 8, the district’s traffic police division managed to inspect 407 vehicles and 517 individuals.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said of the figure, 119 of them were for registration number offences under Rule 6(1) LN173/59, that is failing to follow the set rules.
“For fancy licence plate offences under Section 14(4) of the Road Transport Act 1987, my men have issued a total of 52 summonses to motorists. And for not having a registration number under Section 14(1) of the same Act, a total of 26 summonses were issued.
“The highest summonses for registration numbers failing to follow the rules, are motorcycles with 55, followed by cars (42), four-wheel drive vehicles (18), and vans (four).
“On fancy licence plate offences, 29 summonses were issued to motorcycles, 20 to cars, two to four-wheel drive vehicles and one to a van. For not having a registration number, 25 motorcycles and a car were issued summonses,” he said.
Ahsmon said that a total of 169 traffic summonses were also issued for various offences in the first five days of the operation.
