Cigarettes believed to be untaxed were seized.

MIRI: The Sarawak Marine Police have seized a large number of untaxed cigarettes and a van worth RM439,000 in a recent operation named ‘Ops Kontraban’.

This operation occurred on Monday, behind a fuel station at Jalan Usahawan, near the Miri Bypass.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said that the Marine Police Region 5’s intelligence unit (URM) discovered the illicit cigarettes inside the van around 10 am during the operation.

The police also detained the van’s driver to assist in the investigation.

According to him, the team subsequently conducted an inspection within the van and found a total of 39,000 cigarette sticks, including 2,000 Parkway menthol sticks, 8,000 Filter Parkway sticks, 10,000 Rave sticks, and 19,000 Premium International sticks, all packaged in boxes suspected to be untaxed.

The case is under investigation in accordance with the Customs Act 1967.
