KUCHING: Political observer Datuk Peter Minos has praised Indonesia’s steady and confident ascent on the global stage, predicting a future of developed status by 2050 or even earlier.
Reflecting on his visit to Jakarta three years ago, he acknowledged the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic but highlighted the nation’s swift recovery in its aftermath.
He noted a remarkable transformation in the cityscape of Jakarta, marked by the proliferation of high-rise buildings symbolising Indonesia’s economic prowess.
Crucially, Minos observed that infrastructure developments, such as the Light Rail Transit (LRT), flyovers, and a high-speed train connecting Jakarta and Bandung, have significantly alleviated longstanding traffic issues.
“Wealth and prosperity are evident everywhere. This is repeated and replicated in Jogjakarta and Surabaya,” he said in a statement.
He asserted that the key driver of this growth is the burgeoning tourism sector, fueled by the 270 million locals engaging in domestic tourism and foreigners flocking to destinations like Bali.
He mentioned that the country offers a blend of modern and traditional attractions, complemented by the warmth and friendliness of its people.
“Not for the sake of overpraising, but I must say the Indonesians keep their multi-racial, multi-religious, and multi-cultural identity on an even keel. They keep things in moderation and do not say offensive things about each other’s race or religion.”
Minos, who is the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman, quoted his Indonesian friends in Jakarta, who emphasised the value of moderation, stating, “God gives us our race and religion, so why quarrel over them?”
On the same note, he commended Indonesian president Joko Widodo (Jokowi), saying he emerged as a linchpin in Indonesia’s economic miracle of the last decade.
Describing him as honest, humble, and clean, Minos said Jokowi’s leadership style is characterised by balancing competing interests and ensuring that political issues do not adversely impact the economy.
“Any problem, he solves it with compromise and wisdom. This Jokowi is very smart and very good.”
As President Jokowi approaches his retirement on Feb 14, 2024, Minos said that Indonesia will sorely miss his leadership. “They love and respect him.”
