KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to a proposal by the National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS), in collaboration with the State Farmers Organisation (SFO), to develop Native Customary Rights (NCR) land into coconut and corn plantation.

Nafas Board of Directors chairman Datuk Zamri Yaakob said the proposal was discussed during a courtesy call by members of the association on Abang Johari at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, here today (Jun 20).

During the courtesy call, the visitors shared views on developing the agriculture sector in Sarawak as an effort to restore the nation’s food security.

Zamri said NAFAS will focus on planting coconut and maize crops which are currently in high demand.

NAFAS will also collaborate with Area Farmers’ Organisations (PPK) to mobilise efforts such as the promotion of paddy cultivation by distributing 40,000 metric tonnes of paddy fertiliser to farmers.

Also present during the courtesy visit were Agriculture Modernisation and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom and his deputy Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail.
