KUCHING: Sarawak’s preparations as the host for the upcoming 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) have reached more than 50 percent.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said, so far SUKMA’s preparations in sports facilities have reached 60 percent while Sarawak’s athletes are more than 70 percent prepared.

“We only have 190 days left. So, we want all the support we can have to ensure that the Sarawak contingent wins.

“Preparations are underway and we want everyone including the media, members of the public and the local communities to play a part and provide support, most certainly we want to achieve a lot of gold in SUKMA later,” he said.

Rentap was speaking to reporters during a Chinese New Year open house at Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Datuk Richard Wee’s residence, on Saturday (Feb 10).

Regarding Sarawak athletes’ preparation, Rentap said an evaluation will be made by the end of February to look at the final list of athletes who will represent Sarawak in SUKMA.

“We will take a closer look at the existing list at the end of this month,” he said.

In addition, Rentap hopes that sports fans, especially the locals would provide their support ahead of the competition.

“I leave it to the people of Sarawak to support our state representatives so that they have a better spirit to win SUKMA this year. As for our part, we will do our best,” he said.

For the record, SUKMA 2024 will be hosted across Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Serian, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri from Aug 17 to Aug 24.
