KUCHING: The Prisons Department nationwide has taken drastic steps to segregate inmates with immediate effect in its efforts to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

The measures include granting inmates for minor offences with release-on-license (ROL) and transferring those guilty under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act to the National Service Training Programme Camps (PLKN) which would serve as temporary prisons.

State Prisons deputy director Fathi Mursidi when contacted confirmed the matter but refused to give any details on the measures in Sarawak.

“It is implemented at all prisons in Malaysia,” he said briefly.

When asked on the current situation in the prisons in Sarawak, he said the situation was under control, but refused to comment further.

“Sarawak prisons are still safe. I am sorry I cannot make any comments,” he said.

It is learned that the Prison Department has taken immediate action to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 among inmates after a spike in cases in Sabah and Kedah.
