KUCHING: The Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) is inviting the public to a talk on ‘Urban Renewal Through Built Heritage Conservation” by Malaysian prominent architect Lim Take Bane, on this coming July 30, at 9:30 am at the Borneo Cultures Museum, Auditorium (level 1) here.

According to SHS, the talk is part of SHS’s ‘Heritage Speakers Series’ and is co-hosted by the Sarawak Museum Department.

“Lim will look at how we can take stock of heritage buildings in a place, buildings which have survived the passage of time, war, economic depression and modern urban redevelopment by creating an inventory and collating data.

“He will touch on the questions of “Why conserve? What intangible values of heritage architecture should be preserved or conserved? What are the best practices? How to approach the issues of ‘authenticity’ and ‘reversibility’?” SHS said on Friday.

SHS also said that the speaker will discuss how an amplification of the site history and the analysis of the inherent ‘sense of place’ can help convince all stakeholders (owners, developers, users, residents, statutory authorities) of the true value of built assets inherited from previous generations, and that these can be made into a viable commercial success too.
