KUCHING: The Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) is hoping to see one of its members appointed as the new Temenggong for the Iban community in Sri Aman.

PRS President Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said this came following the vacancy of the position previously held by a party member.

“What we are lacking and where this appointment was made by the political parties especially GPS, we want our members to be considered for positions such as Penghulu, Pemanca and Temenggong.

“Because there are not many positions that PRS has occupied, particularly the Temenggong of all the divisions in Sarawak.

“PRS has one before, but now there is vacancy, so we would like the vacancy to be filled by a PRS member,” he said in a press conference after chairing the party supreme council meeting at its headquarters here today (Apr 21).

On a related note, Salang also called for more representation of its members to be appointed to the role of councillors and board members of government-linked companies (GLCs).

“When there is vacancy in the board of GLCs, we hope representatives from PRS can be appointed.

“We will suggest the candidate but of course it will depend on the capability and qualification of each individual that we want to put up,” he said.

He added there are already few party members being appointed to the board members of the GLCs including himself where he holds the position as the chairman of the Rajang Port Authority.

When asked if PRS is underrepresented in the local council and GLCs, Salang said he believed all parties will think they do not have enough representation.

“But this is a gradual process, it is not something we want to get done overnight.

“As we gain experience, we have more people who are qualified, especially our members and we are more confident in recommending them to be part of those boards,” he said.
