MUKAH: On Nov 1, the government declared the termination of chicken subsidies and price limits.

The termination of these measures is expected to have an impact on individuals and traders, especially food establishment owners, as living costs continue to rise.

Here are some reactions from the public regarding this decision:

Fara’ain Sebli, 31:

“The end of chicken subsidies and price controls will almost certainly increase the cost of wet goods. Adjusting menu prices, especially those that include ingredients like chicken, poses a challenge for merchants. If prices rise, we may need to increase food prices, but the big question is whether customers can afford it. This is a major concern for us as traders. I hope this isn’t cancelled, but if it is, we should ensure that the incomes of those working in various sectors across the country are increased.”

Zuraimie Mustapha, 30:

“The market price of chicken will undoubtedly rise, and so will the price of food. With rising prices, the purchasing power of consumers will decrease. Considering the current cost of living, ending chicken subsidies and price controls should be reconsidered as it will burden the people. The government should explore additional ways to assist the people, such as expanding the availability of subsidised products.”

Norashykin Karnain, 21:

“In my opinion, ending chicken subsidies and price controls will make life difficult for the people. The price of chicken is expected to increase, affecting food establishment owners who may have to raise their prices. As the cost of living goes up, the purchasing power of consumers will decrease. This is a lose-lose situation, especially for the people and traders.”

Nuradila Sapawi, 35:

“As a trader, this decision is indeed challenging because we will have to increase our selling prices and explore new strategies to attract customers. Since wholesalers determine chicken prices, ending these subsidies and price controls will inevitably lead to higher chicken prices. As a trader, I hope these subsidies do not end, especially for those of us living outside the city who find it difficult to access raw chicken.”
