SIBU: District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili is urging hawkers who fall victim to RM20 fake notes in Sibu Jaya wet market to lodge a police report as soon as possible.

Zulkipli when contacted said that so far, no police reports have been lodged regarding the fake currency and advised the general public here to do so immediately.

“After a police report is lodged, only then the investigation can be carried out by the police,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Earlier yesterday a viral video was posted on various social media platforms, alleging that a few hawkers in the wet market were cheated by a customer with RM20 fake notes.

Possessing or producing counterfeit money is an offence under Section 489B of the Penal Code.

The section states that whoever sells to, or buys or receives from, any other person, or otherwise traffics in or uses as genuine, any forged or counterfeit currency note or bank note, knowing or having reason to believe the same to be forged or counterfeit, shall be punished with a maximum 20-year imprisonment and shall also be liable to be fined, if convicted.
