KUCHING: Police have quashed rumours that an Indonesian woman was raped and killed in a room on the third floor of a shophouse at Jalan Muara Tuan, Bandar Riyal, Samarahan.

Samarahan police Chief DSP Lee Chong Chern confirmed that there was no foul play as the deceased whose body was found in a decomposed state, had a history of health problems and that cash totalling over RM1,000 was recovered in the dead woman’s room. He said police had to break into her room to gain access to her remains.

The deceased, identified as Gantika, aged 42 from Cianjur, Bandung, Indonesia had rented the room in May this year from the shop owner who claimed she never paid her rental.

The shop owner said she lodged a police report on the matter last Thursday after she had gone to look for Gantika several times but found her room always locked. After lodging the report, she decided to go again to look for her tenant and smelled a strong stench emanating from the room following which she informed the police.

Initial police investigation revealed that Gantika had worked in a nearby eatery and quit her job on the 29th of last month due to health problems.

Police found her passport, two cell phones, cash amounting to RM1,272 and jewellery in the room. Also found was a bag containing medicine.

The remains were brought to the Sarawak General Hospital morgue.

DSP Lee said the case was classified as sudden death and a post-mortem would be carried out.
