SERIAN: A sum of RM300,000 has been allocated to the Otong Niee freshwater fishpond project at Kampung Riih Daso here.

The project is set to put Kampung Riih Daso on the map as the largest producer of tilapia fish in the area.

The allocation was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. The project houses 120 cages, breeding some 90,000 tilapia since its commencement last June.

“I am ready to help but I am waiting for the report from the Department of Agriculture in terms of its potential. If it is good, then we will develop it with more modern facilities,” said Uggah.

He said this during his visit to the project site today.

Additionally, Uggah noted that he would assist in developing a cereal corn planting project to be cultivated by the Bukit Semuja Constituency Agriculture Bureau at Kampung Riih Daso.

He said the initiative was put forward as Sarawak was currently spending RM400 million a year to import cereal corn for livestock feed, adding that cereal corn possessed great potential to be developed in order to meet the required supply.

“I hope the Bukit Semuja Constituency Agriculture Bureau can plan this programme and I will help.

“We want to see youths, including women, to be involved in programme such as this because agriculture can be a lucrative field.”

He also encouraged the rural community to be involved in goat and cattle farming, in which the Sarawak government had provided allocations specifically for the programme.

Accompanying Uggah during his visit was Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus.
