MIRI: The Lutong fire station, which caters to over 350,000 people, is up and running, and it aims to improve emergency response time.

Ministry of Housing and Local Government secretary-general Datuk M Noor Azman Taib expressed confidence that the station would cut emergency response time in Lutong and the northern part of the city to 10 minutes from the average total response time.

“I was told that the nearest station (to Lutong and Permyjaya areas) is Lopeng, which is 17km away, and I hope with the establishment of the Lutong fire station, response time would be shortened,” he said when launching the fire station on Today (Oct 17).

“Construction began on Jan 2, 2020 at cost of RM8.2mil.

“Built on a 3.33ha land near Kuala Batu 1, it is a Category D fire station equipped with a machinery room, administrative office, logistics store and covered garage, parade ground and four one-storey quarters,” said Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director-general Dato Sri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid.

“The project was completed ahead of schedule.

“This brings the total number of fire stations in Sarawak to 38 and it is the fifth station in Miri Zone (Zone 6 Sarawak) in addition to the existing ones, which are Lopeng, Miri, Marudi and Batu Niah,” said  Mohammad Hamdan.

A total of 25 firefighters are stationed at the Lutong station.
