SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is currently moving towards mechanised services to maintain the town’s cleanliness.

Its chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh said one of the council’s initial steps towards this end is to appoint a contractor who uses the road sweeper truck to clean the roads.

He said the council has to adopt more efficient and convenient measures as more roads are being built and existing roads are getting harder to maintain and clean through conventional manpower.

“The contract (sweeping the road) is for Sibu downtown area. Meaning to say from the Sibu waterfront area to Jalan Mission. If it is good then we will extend it to all other commercial areas and protocol roads,” he told reporters after attending the road sweeper truck demonstration by the contractor near the Jalan Alan roundabout here, today.

Ting said cleaning will be conducted during the night time as there will be fewer cars on the road.

He, however, did not say when the contractor would begin work, but said it would be “soon”.

“After the contractor has confirmed his schedule, we will make the announcement, most likely during the council full meeting (to alert the public),” he said.
