SIBU: Three culverts worth RM50,000 will be installed at Lorong Oya 8 and Lorong Kapor 3 under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP).
Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said the project involves the installation of three culverts — one culvert in Lorong Oya 8 and another two in Lorong Kapor 3.
The project also includes a crossover to the residents’ homes from the road.
“Due to the collapse of this crossover, it makes the back portion resemble a pond rather than a drain. The water cannot pass through which also causes stagnant water resulting in the breeding of aedes mosquitoes, leading to dengue fever in the area.
“That’s why we need to remove this collapsed crossover and build a new culvert for them. The residents have been suffering for a long time because of this,” he said when met by reporters during the project handover ceremony to the contractor here today.
Chieng said the Bukit Assek area has been one of the hotspot areas for dengue and the drainage system failure has become one of the contributors to the illness.
“So slowly and gradually, I would like to improve this drainage system. At least we will have a flowing (and working) drainage system. A similar improvement would take effect in Lorong Oya 8.
“They (the house owners) cannot afford to do it (repairing the crossover), that’s why I’m assisting through this RTP project to solve the local issue,” he said.
The assemblyman said the project will take around three months to complete and hopes that the contractors will start work as soon as possible.
“I hope they (the contractors) can start early so that residents here are able to enjoy a cleaner living environment. We will inform the resident when work is expected to begin, so that they can prepare,” he said.
