KUCHING: The adaptation of new technology through the Internet of Things (IoT) system in the agriculture and livestock industries can have a positive impact on industry players.

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said such a system can assist in management and monitoring.

He said the Smart Aquaculture System by SME Flow Studios can monitor the acidity content (pH) in the pond as well as the content of ammonia, oxygen, and temperature through IoT sensors connected to a database.

“Furthermore, this system is also equipped with an automatic fish feeding system and an aerator, which is an automatic water fan system based on pH level readings in the pond,” he said during a visit to the Freshwater Fish Pond Project that utilises this system in Bintulu yesterday.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, the system was first implemented by pond owner, Mendung Nali, in 2023 at an initial installation cost of RM20,000.

Sharing his experience, Mendung said during the Chinese New Year celebration, he could still monitor the condition of the fish pond water even from a distance.

All these can be done using the system and through a smartphone.

Therefore, Rundi hopes the efforts made by Mendung can be shared with young people to encourage and motivate them to engage in modern agriculture.

Also present were Director of Agriculture Sarawak, Dominic Chunggat, Bintulu Resident, Nyurak Keti, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Jenny Banga, Sebauh district officer William Manggoi, Pemanca Limin Anai and Pemanca Gerunsin.
