BELAGA: The state government under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will continue to strive to narrow the digital gap between the urban and rural communities.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government’s initiatives, through the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), thus far are the best approach undertaken in producing technology-savvy community.

Abang Johari launches the ‘Narrowing the Digital Gap Among Rural Community’ in Long Busang. Residents are now accessing the internet via parabola satellite and with a speed of 30mbps.

“The initiatives will eventually help to bridge the people residing in the state’s remote areas with the outside world,” he said when launching ‘Narrowing the Digital Gap Among Rural Community’ at Long Busang, Bukit Mabong in Kapit yesterday.

Abang Johari said as part of the initiatives, two remote areas, Long San in Baram and Long Busang in Belaga, have been identified for a pioneer internet network experiment.

According to the chief minister, the internet network would be continuously monitored by SMA and upgraded from time to time.

“I’ve especially chosen these two locations for the experiment because both places are located in hilly and mountainous areas which could cause the connection to be weak and unstable,” he added.
