MIRI: The upgrading works of Saberkas Night Market, one of Miri City’s top tourism destination, is expected to be completed by next month Miri Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang said the RM1.079 million project, which was two months behind schedule, is now 85 percent completed with the expected completion of the project to be in two weeks time.

“We are looking to improve the flooring aspect of the night market by replacing it with new flooring too,” he told reporters after inspecting the progress of the project here yesterday.

Yii said the traders, now operating at a temporary site, had agreed to move to Saberkas Night Market after Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration next month.

He also said, Miri City Council (MCC) had not incurred additional cost due to the project delay as the contract for the project stipulated that a penalty would be imposed against the contractor if the project could not be completed on time.

“The project was delayed due to the contractor’s fault and penalty will be imposed due to the late completion by the contractor,” he said adding that the upgrading works included plumbing works, drainage, replacing new roofs and construction of a new surau.

For the record, the contractor had been given the task to complete the project within three months starting January this year and to be ready by March 2018 but was given an extension to May 2.

The main reason for the delay was largely due to the contractor having to import steel materials from the Peninsula as it was not available locally as well as the inclement weather.

Presently there are 126 traders operating at the night market that opens every week on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
