KUCHING: Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority, SALCRA’s RM35 million plant to produce animal feed is expected to be operational by year end.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the plant is under construction in Saratok and will produce animal feed from palm oil waste.

“SALCRA has a lot of palm oil plantations, and they just need to collect the waste from their plantation and transport it to the central area where the animal feed will be produced.”

Abang Johari said this after declaring open the Dayak Cultural Foundation (DCF) and Dayak Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) headquarters at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here on Saturday (Aug 19).

He said the rise in prices for poultry products stemmed from imports of animal feed from overseas which is affected by the value of Ringgit Malaysia.

“When the Ringgit is weak, the import bill will be high and consequently the price of poultry and others will be affected.

“Sarawak is one of the major producers of palm oil, but we do not look at the waste. So, we want to plan properly after the life cycle of one harvest which is why SALCRA is looking into turning the biomass into animal feed.
“This will help reduce our reliance on the import of animal feed,” he said.

Abang Johari said with the success of this upcoming project, the state government will set up more plants to get other products from the palm oil biomass.

“There are many opportunities when it comes to green economy and converting our palm oil biomass is part of the shift as well as a circular economy,” he said.
