KUCHING: A search and rescue (SAR) operation for a boy believed to have drowned from a jetty at Kampung Buntal was carried out yesterday.

According to State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) deputy director (operations) Tiong Ling Hii, a team of firefighters from Petra Jaya fire and rescue station (BBP) was despatched to the scene.

He added that Kampung Buntal auxiliary firefighters were also present to assist in the SAR operation.

According to witnesses, the 11-year-old boy was fishing with his friends when he accidentally fell into the water from the jetty.

The operation centre received a call at 3.55pm about the incident yesterday afternoon.

At press time, the SAR operation was still ongoing with 11 firefighters, four auxiliary firefighters, as well as police, local villagers and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) members involved.
