SARATOK: This year’s Saratok Festival is expected to be more lively with its launching coinciding with the celebration of Sarawak Day on July 22.

Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said that festival finale will be boat races on July 28, 29 and 30.

“So far it has been agreed that the Saratok Festival opening take place on July 22.

“I think it’s a coincidence because we can commemorate and celebrate Sarawak Day together,” he said after the Saratok Festival and Kalaka Regatta Master Committee Meeting which was also attended by Krian assemblyman Friday Belik.

He said starting July 22 sales activities will be held at the fairground.

“As usual, we will have Saratok Kitchen that will offer a variety of food and drinks … there will also be sales of craft items, clothes and so on.

“In addition to that, Labang Bike Week, sepak takraw competitions, pangkah gasing, Kalaka Fun Run (five and 10 kilometer runs), cultural nights, development exhibitions and many more will be held,” he said.

For the Kalaka Regata, Mohamad said, it will stick to the original date from July 28 to 30, with a prayer recitation ceremony scheduled for July 28.

“RM15,000 in cash awaits the winner of the Raja Sungai award and a total of RM102,300 in prizes are on offer.

“It means that with such a big prize, Sungai Krian will host sprint boat races, open bidar and pump ski races.

“For the boat racing event, we have agreed to give the opportunity to all longhouse representatives in Kalaka, Krian and Kabong constituencies to participate in a special longhouse category event.

“Also, the Kalaka Regatta this time will see a sprint event (marathon) and a decorated boat competition (at night).

“Our desire is to maintain friendship, at the same time highlight the ideas and creativity of the residents to enliven the Kalaka Regatta 2023,” he added.
