KUCHING: The Sarawak Baitulmal Fund (TBS) has launched the Ramadan Kasih Programme at the Ummah Distribution Centre (UDC) in Medan Hamidah to intensify efforts to help the needy in Sarawak.

According to its general manager, Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie, the programme is a small effort to assist those in needs as they welcome the holy month of Ramadan. TBS distributes aid to eligible individuals based on a list of the poor verified by the organisation.

“This contribution aims to assist the target group in obtaining aid, particularly in terms of livelihood, education, health and others.

“At the same time, it is also proof that we are distributing the funds collected to those who are truly eligible for aid,” he said this during the Ramadan Kasih Programme and TBS Aid Distribution at UDC today (March 24).

Abang Mohd Shibli added that the contribution is a continuous effort and RM84.7 million was distributed for the same purpose according to Shariah requirements last year.

He expressed confidence in the group chosen for the programme based on a thorough study that identified 4,486 poor individuals in Sarawak.

In Kuching, 30 eligible recipients received more than RM50,000 in aid under the Mengukuhkan Tradisi Keilmuan and Memantapkan Kebajikan Ummah programmes.

“The aid distributed is an initiative by TBS,” said Abang Mohd Shibli.

He also encouraged the community to contribute in the form of financial or food donations to help the poor from house to house in the future.

During the same programme, Telekom Malaysia Berhad also fulfilled its business zakat obligation by paying RM309,855 to TBS.
