Sarawak MMEA use helicopter in ‘Ops Naga Timur’

KUCHING: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) of Sarawak are using an AW139 helicopter in Ops Naga Timur to detect foreign fishing boats in the waters in the state.

Sarawak Maritime director First Admiral (Maritime), Robert Teh Geok Chuan said that the MMEA Air Operations had conducted flights daily up to over 150 nautical miles from land to conduct aerial surveillance.

“The operations conducted this time not only involved the state MMEA’s sea assets but also the Air Operations Division and the MMEA Special Task and Rescue (STAR) team.

“The effort conducted shows the commitment of MMEA in fulfilling the trust and duty to protect the waters in the state,” he said in a statement here, today.

However, he said that no foreign fishing boats were spotted in the waters of Sarawak during the surveillances since July 15.

Those with information on any suspicious activities in the state’s waters could contact the Sarawak Maritime Operations Centre at 082-432544 which operated for 24 hours or MERS 999. – Bernama
