Sarawak records 512 new positive cases

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 512 new Covid-19 positive cases yesterday (May 18), bringing the state’s tally to 39,328.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 353 cases or 60.13 percent of the new cases were detected in Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Kapit and Kuching districts.

Miri district accounted for 96 new cases; Bintulu 91; Sibu 69; Kapit 51; Kuching 46; Betong 35; Bukit Mabong 20; Sri Aman 18; Selangau 18; Samarahan 10; Pusa nine; Sarikei eight; Subis and Belaga (six cases each); Tanjung Manis four; Beluru Song, Tatau and Kanowit (three cases each); Lawas, Serian and Pakan (two cases each); Daro, Meradong, Asajaya, Saratok, Tebedu, Mukah and Sebauh districts (one case each).

“Forty-nine out of the 512 cases were individuals who were symptomatic during the Covid-19 screening.

A total of 426 individuals had been instructed to undergo quarantine at designated places,” the committee said in a statement.

SDMC added that 349 new cases were detected when they were screened after having contacts with positive cases, 75 were individuals linked to active clusters, 52 were detected from other screenings in health facilities, 34 cases were from screening of symptomatic individuals in health facilities while two were import B cases involving an individual returning from other states.

The committee further explained that yesterday, Miri district recorded seven cases from the screening of oil and gas sector workers. All the cases were asymptomatic and they were detected at their Offshore Transit Centre (OTC) before being allowed to report to the rig.

“The case is still under investigation and all their close contacts will be identified to undergo screening as well as quarantine,” it added.

SDMC reported that 409 patients had recovered and were discharged from hospitals statewide on Sunday.

Of these, 104 were from the Sibu Hospital and the Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) under it; 78 from the Bintulu Hospital and PKRC under it; 32 from the Sarawak General Hospital and the PKRC under it; 17 from the PKRC in Betong; 15 from the Kapit Hospital and the PKRC under it; 15 from the Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC under it; six from the Mukah PKRC; four from the Serian PKRC and two from the Lawas PKRC.

These bring the number of recovered and discharged cases thus far to 32,539 or 82.74 percent of the total number of cases in Sarawak.

“There are 6,473 individuals still undergoing treatment at PKRCs and hospital isolation wards in the state.

“518 persons under investigation (PUIs) have been reported with five awaiting laboratory test results,” added SDMC.
