KUCHING: The upcoming Budget 2024 for Sarawak is expected to be similar to previous budgets, without much change.
Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said that historically, Sarawak receives less budget allocation than Sabah. The reasons for these allocations remain unclear to Sarawak.
“Sarawak significantly contributes to the nation’s income, especially from the oil, gas, and other industries. However, the funds allocated for our infrastructure development often fall short of our hopes,” said Dr Penguang to New Sarawak Tribune today (Sept 9).
He said that budget allocations should reflect the founding spirit of Malaysia, where Sabah, Sarawak, and Malaya are seen as equal entities.
He further expressed that Borneo’s states, like Sarawak, should not be treated the same as other Malaysian states.
Dr Penguang also highlighted the importance of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report. These documents, now part of the Malaysian Constitution, should be central in ongoing negotiations related to MA63.
“For transparency, Sarawak aims to be part of the Inland Revenue Board. This will help us understand our contribution to the national treasury better,” he added.
