Sarawak to host 10th Malaysia Independent Chinese Secondary Schools Ball Games Championship

KUCHING: The 10th Malaysia Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (MICSS) Ball Games Championship 2023 is set to take place in Sarawak, attracting a total of 128 boys and girls teams from 43 schools across the nation.

This prestigious tournament, held every three years, will be held from Aug 27 to 31, and is expected to draw a crowd of 1,700 to 2,000 individuals, including teachers and family members of the participants.

Board of Management Committee of Kuching Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No. 1, 3 and 4 chairman Datuk Richard Wee expressed excitement about hosting the tournament for the first time in Sarawak.

With the large number of participants and spectators expected to arrive in Kuching, arrangements for accommodation, such as hotels, have been made.

The opening ceremony will be held at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak on Aug 27, officiated by Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The closing ceremony on Aug 31 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching is expected to be graced by Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Throughout the five-day tournament, various locations around Kuching will host four sports: basketball at the Sungai Apong Basketball Court and Chung Hua Middle School No. 3, volleyball at Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School, badminton at the Sarawak Badminton Association, and table tennis at SJK Chung Hua No. 3.

Wee also announced that the Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development had allocated RM200,000 as financial assistance for the tournament.

“We hope that all sports-related sponsors, including sports gear suppliers, beverage companies, and transportation services, will come forward and generously support us,” Wee stated during a press conference held at Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 after chairing a meeting on the championship.

Following the press conference, event committee chairman Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming joined Wee in unveiling the logo for the championship.
