KUCHING: Sarawak wants to host the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) event next year.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Sarawak Public Communications Unit) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said UKAS has submitted an application for HAWANA to be held in the state to the relevant minister.

“Through UKAS, we have applied for the HAWANA to be held in Sarawak and we have received a positive response from the minister, who has agreed to hold HAWANA in Sarawak,” he said.

He told reporters this after receiving a courtesy call from Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) Sarawak led by its director Wan Azhan Wan Hamat here recently.

Abdullah mentioned that hosting HAWANA would not only entail a media seminar but also an exhibition showcasing the progress of broadcasting and the historical evolution of media in Sarawak over the past 60 years since Sarawak’s independence.

The courtesy visit from RTM was to establish close cooperation with government agencies such as UKAS.

“The collaboration is important, especially in the media, to bridge the information gap between the community and government at both state and federal levels,” Abdullah said.

He also said various activities and programmes aimed at supporting media professionals will be held throughout Sarawak next year.

“God willing, next year, we will organise several programmes for media personnel across Sarawak, including media conferences and media sports events,” he said.
