KUCHING: Sarawak’s tourism industry is making a comeback after the impact of COVID-19, having earned about RM4.97 billion from tourism between January and June this year.
During this time, approximately 1.9 million tourists visited Sarawak, which is almost back to pre-pandemic levels.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said their target for this year is to welcome 3 million tourists and earn RM7.25 billion in revenue.
Abdul Karim is confident they can achieve this target and even surpass it.
He said this during a media briefing for Badan Budaya Unimas (Bayu), which will be participating in the Festival de Confolens in southern France from Aug 9 until 15.
Abdul Karim believed that if they receive more than 4 million foreign visitors in December, the tourism revenue will exceed RM8 billion.
In 2022, the tourism industry in Sarawak brought in revenues of RM4.96 billion and saw 2.03 million tourists.
