KUCHING: Sarawak’s collaborations with the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) industry leaders in compound semiconductor development are poised to drive innovation.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said these collaborations will drive innovations to increase the capability of microchips in powering new technologies and applications.

He noted the semiconductor landscape had recently undergone a paradigm shift, with compound semiconductors emerging as the cornerstone of next-generation technologies.

As such, he said Sarawak aspires to become a leading hub and pivotal solutions provider, fostering an environment conducive to research and development and the commercialisation of cutting-edge semiconductor technology.

“Unlike traditional silicon-based semiconductors, compound semiconductors offer unparalleled performance capabilities across numerous applications, ranging from telecommunications and energy systems to advanced electronics and beyond.

“Recognising this, the Sarawak government views compound semiconductors as vital for innovation, economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.

“We believe that embracing compound semiconductor technologies can unlock new opportunities for growth, innovation, and competitiveness on both the regional and global stages,” he said.

He was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Sarawak’s SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd and the UK’s Compound Semiconductor Application (CSA) Catapult at a ceremony held at the London Parliament building yesterday (Apr 23).

Abang Johari is currently in the UK, accompanied by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.

During the MoU signing ceremony, SMD Semiconductor chief executive officer (CEO) Shariman Jamil represented the company, while CSA Catapult was represented by CEO Martin McHugh.

The Premier told industry players present that SMD Semiconductor operates as a wholly-owned entity of the Sarawak government, established in 2022 to drive technological self-reliance and innovation to realise the state’s vision for the semiconductor sector.

Towards this end, he expressed confidence in the MoU’s ability to propel both parties towards a future of shared success.

“At its core, SMD Semiconductor is on a mission to cultivate an optimal ecosystem, strategically positioning Sarawak as a leading investment destination for the semiconductor industry and a leading solutions provider.

“Currently, SMD strategically engages in collaborative efforts within the UK’s compound semiconductor industry, harnessing collective expertise and resources for impactful research, development, and successful market penetration.

“I firmly believe that as SMD Semiconductor forges strategic alliances and collaborations with leading UK industry partners, it will be instrumental in driving innovations that reshape the capabilities and applications of compound semiconductors,” he added.
