KUCHING: The family of a Sarawakian, Tan Junior, who was trapped in Myanmar after falling victim to a job scam, has claimed that the captors are demanding a RM80,000 ransom for his release.

This was revealed to Michael Kong Feng Nian, special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, when the victim’s family approached him for assistance today.

According to the family, Tan Junior had informed them that he was heading to Kuala Lumpur for work on Feb 5.

However, the family recently received a video call made through the victim’s phone, which showed him tied up in a room and the caller said that the victim was in Myanmar following an unsuccessful attempt to escape his captors.

“For Tan Junior’s safe return to Kuching, the caller demanded a ransom of RM80,000 from the family.

“When the family could not meet the demand, the caller made an alternative offer of RM23,000 to allow the son to continue working in Myanmar as a recruiter for other Malaysians on the pretence of working overseas.

“The caller threatened to relocate the son and coerce him into illegal activities if the payment is not made,” he said.

Kong added that this case sheds light on the dangers associated with seeking employment overseas where many unsuspecting individuals are lured by promises of lucrative opportunities but only to find themselves trapped in such precarious situations.

He also said that the situation should serve as a stern reminder of the importance of exercising caution and verifying the legitimacy of job offers.

“I urge the public to remain vigilant and refrain from engaging in employment opportunities that compromise their safety and well-being.

“There are ample job opportunities available locally, and it is vital to conduct thorough research and verification before accepting any offers, especially those involving overseas employment,” he said.
