KUCHING: Sarawakians must reject disgusting political acts, said Assistant Minister for Corporate Affairs, Abdullah Saidol.

He noted that political issues are inevitable in human history or in the formation of a country.

“Various religions in the world are also not immune to politics,” he said and pointed out that he may sound naïve but is still convinced and believed that there are still small groups of people involved in political issues regardless of their parties, who are sincere and honest in serving the community, willing to sacrifice and fight matters of mutual interests.

“Political issues have been increasingly linked to ill, corrupt and arrogant practices due to the perpetrators’ pursuit of popularity, rank, selfishness and hypocrisy that made society increasingly frustrated by their acts.

“Such disgusting political practices have intensified even when the society is influenced and trapped by such acts such as insulting religion and racism. Such acts are very dangerous and can lead our country into chaos, destroy our unity and increasing misuse of social media,” he said when asked to comment on the implications of gutter politics, yesterday.

“They are people who have brains but do not take responsibility in what they say. Hence, we cannot blame the people’s perspective towards our political leaders.

“Nowadays it is difficult to alter the people’s negative perception towards politics. Thus, it is the responsibility of politicians themselves to tackle political issues with the consensus and respect of the society.

“Maybe it is time leaders from all political parties in this country meet and discuss seriously and honestly and lay down uncertain political practices to ensure that the future generations inherit a safe and calm state,” he said.

He also stressed that solidarity is also an important form of state development by

posing a question, whether the people would choose a happy and harmonious family or a big and beautiful home.

“Sarawak is the most plural state in Malaysia that is home to various ethnic and religious and unique cultures. Thus, let us not be dragged down by a person’s wrong-doing. It’s hard to build our country if the people refuse to unite or cooperate.

“Hence, to ensure that our country continues to develop in peace, we have no choice but to remain united and reject any political element or propaganda to disunite us.

“We must be mindful in choosing leaders who are sincere and work to bring about our development and wellbeing together. We must learn from our past mistakes when making decisions,” Abdullah reiterated.
