KUCHING: Sarawak is committed to staying at the forefront of global biomedical sciences, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He highlighted the state’s strength in biodiversity which he believes holds immense potential.

“Sarawak is dedicated to keeping pace with the world, especially in the field of biomedical sciences.

“I firmly believe this is where our strength lies, given the vast potential of our biodiversity,” he said when addressing the gala dinner in conjunction with the 29th Malaysian Association of Orthodontists (MAO) International Scientific Conference and Trade Exhibition at the Pullman Hotel here last night (Oct 8).

His text of speech was read by his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Abang Johari lauded the recent developments in Sarawak’s biomedical industry, particularly the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC).

“Just a few days ago, our Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC) signed memoranda of understanding and agreement (MoU and MoA) with partners from Australia, Germany, the USA, Singapore, and West Malaysia for the development of the biomedical industry in Sarawak,” he added.

In light of this, he said the Sarawak government’s commitment to this endeavour was evident through the RM200 million pledge for the construction of a biosafety level 3 (BSL3) facility.

Abang Johari said Sarawak is also investing RM1 billion in a state-of-the-art cancer centre here.

“The centre is not only for Sarawakians but also to cater for people within the Southeast Asia region with the hope that one day Kuching will become a prominent cancer treatment centre in the region,” he said.

On the same note, Premier expressed his enthusiasm for the scientific conference themed ‘Bedfellows in Orthodontics’, highlighting Sarawak’s unwavering support for the MAO.

“The partnership between the Sarawak government and MAO has been instrumental in fostering innovation and progress in the field of orthodontics.

“The exchange of ideas and sharing of knowledge at this conference will undoubtedly lead to new insights and breakthroughs in our field,” he said.
