KUCHING: The Early Childhood Development Council (MPAKS) has requested the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to consider teachers, carers and assistants of taskas (nurseries) and tadikas (kindergartens) as frontliners.

“So the vaccination process also has to include teachers at tadikas and taskas because they are in very close contact with the children,” said Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

She said this during a press conference at the Baitul Makmur II Building here today (Mar 9).

At the same time, she emphasised that the standard operating procedures (SOPs) needed to be practised diligently at early childhood education institutions (IPAKKs) to keep the children safe.

“SOP compliance is important not only within the taskas and tadikas, but teachers also have to be careful when they are moving within the community outside the IPAKK. This is because they can potentially carry the virus and affect the children,” she said.

She said as of Feb 28, there were 5,957 teachers and carers at tadikas and taskas statewide, as well as 3,945 assistants.

“The total number of children enrolled in taskas and tadikas is 68,133,” she said.

Fatimah said as of Feb 28, there was a total of 2,968 registered taskas and tadikas in Sarawak, including private-owned institutions.
