MUKAH: It is business as usual for some fishermen here despite the movement control order (MCO).

A survey by New Sarawak Tribune on Friday and the past few days found that the fishermen had been going out to sea daily, and providing a good supply of fresh seafood to the wet market here.

The price of seafood is reasonable as well partly because not many people are converging on the wet market due to the MCO.

The Dalat and Mukah District Council had ordered the wet market to open between 7am to 2pm only, beginning March 20.

‘Panau’ fishermen however are experiencing a slightly different situation.

‘Panau’ is a type of traditional fishing and these fishermen usually return home after 3pm, and the fish caught included the black pomfret and ‘jamah’.

A retired fisherman, identified only as Jul, in his 60s, said the MCO does not slow down ‘panau’ fishing because whatever is caught is immediately frozen and only brought to the market the following day.

It is believed that there are fewer ‘panau’ fishermen compared to coastal fishermen.
