SERIAN: Tarat assemblyman Datuk Roland Sagah envisions Serian as a potential light industry hub and is eager to get things going.

Any development plan in the area, he said, must be practical, easy to implement and enticing to investors.

“Anything related to light industry and high-tech industry that is also light is very necessary.

“I want it to be accomplished but it needs to be practical, able to be implemented and friendly to entrepreneurs as well as project or industry operators,” he said during the Thinking Lab for Serian Master Plan Study 2020 to 2030 today.

He pointed out that implementing agencies should study the local market to determine what type of industry is suitable to be operated in Tebedu, Serian and Siburan.

Serian, he reiterated, can be an industrial area but only for light industry.

“It is important to ascertain any companies they know that want to use the area as a centre for their industrial expansion.

“What makes Serian attractive is probably the lower cost of living compared to Kuching.

“The green environment (must) be maintained for a comfortable life,” he said.

At the event, the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and implementing agencies presented a roadmap to put Serian on a high growth trajectory to contribute to Sarawak’s overall vision of achieving a high-growth status.

Its key catalytic projects will enable opportunities to be unlocked, helping to overcome challenges in delivery and signal to the market as well as the community that Serian is ready for change.

Sagah who is also the Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said related work is underway with strong cooperation between the EPU and consultant teams.

“This is only the beginning, and nothing has been decided,” he said.

Serian has set a vision to be the green growth driver for Sarawak 2030, leveraging natural assets and human capital advantage to develop an equitable and sustainable economy.
