SARAWAK Forestry Corporation (SFC) will be organising the International Primatological Society-Malaysian Primatological Society (IPS-MPS) Joint Meeting 2023 from Aug 19 to 25.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the international meeting is themed ‘Primates and People: A New Horizon’.

He said the custodian of national parks and wildlife Sarawak has been given the honour to deliver the keynote address in recognition of its continuous efforts in primate conservation and research.

“In March this year, Sarawak joined the Malaysia delegation to the 11th Meeting of Partners to the Partnership for East Asian-Australasian Flyways in Brisbane, Australia.

“SFC reported the latest status of the Asian Waterbirds Census and Bako Buntal Bay which is the only location for the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Network Site in Malaysia,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.

In 2022 and 2023, Awang Tengah said that SFC together with Sunway Malaysia and technology companies from Japan, namely Funlead and Aerosense were awarded RM1.3 million research grant for study on mangrove forest.

He said the research grant was awarded by the Asia Pacific Telecommunity.

“The study involves the use of the latest drone technology from Aerosense and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) developed by Funlead.

“The aim of the study is to identify the composition and health level of trees in the Rajang Mangrove National Park in 2022 and at the Kuching Wetlands National Park site,” he added.
