KUCHING: The Sessions Court here sentenced a coffin shop assistant to five years in prison and two lashes of the cane for causing grievous hurt to a 23-year-old man last year.
Delly, 20, pleaded guilty before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi to a charge framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
He was accused of causing grievous hurt to the victim by hitting him with a wooden stick at the car park behind an entertainment centre along Jalan Canna around 2.30 am on Aug 28, 2023.
Based on the facts of the case, the police received a call from a medical officer at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) regarding a man suffering head injuries after being beaten by several unknown men.
Delly was eventually arrested at an entertainment centre on Feb 18.
Investigations found that he assaulted the victim by punching and hitting him in the head with a stick at the car park behind an entertainment centre.
In addition, medical report confirmed that the victim sustained skull and facial bone fractures.
It was understood that Delly assaulted the victim as he had disturbed the girlfriend of Delly’s friend while in the entertainment centre.
He also admitted that he would always protect his friend named Melvin in case of any incident.
During the proceedings, DPP Mohammad Fauzan Zamri requested that the court impose a heavy sentence on Delly, who was unrepresented by counsel, as a deterrent.
