Dr Annuar updates details on Sibu District’s Covid-19 cases.

SIBU: Youths aged 16 and 17 years in Sibu may get their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines next week.

Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) coordinator, Dr Annuar Rapaee said they were waiting for further instructions from the government to exercise the vaccination programme.

He was commenting on a recent announcement by newly-minted Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin that the government has approved the vaccination programme for persons under 18 years old.

“This is definitely good news from KJ (Khairy Jamaluddin). We are grateful and would like to thank him for the decision,” he said.

Dr Annuar who is also Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing said his team was preparing to vaccinate teenagers aged 16 and 17 under the first phase.

He said the vaccination process involving this group of teenagers comprising mostly students, could be completed within three days.

“We have planned to conduct the vaccination programme at Dewan Suarah Sibu and Sibu Indoor Stadium will also be converted into a Covid-19 Assessment Centre (CAC),” he said.

He said that the current supply of vaccines was sufficient to implement the vaccination programme.

“This will enable the students to safely return to school once schools reopen apart from being a reassurance to parents, he said.
